We do a “Big Band Praise” one Sunday every summer. I contacted you in July or August about some more tunes. At that time you were getting ready to go into the studio to record some new ones. I am wondering if you have any available now. I have all the Brentwood tunes and Big Band Hymns tunes already. Please let me know. I really enjoy playing your tunes.

Got your message about the new CD, “No Pews Required,” and was wondering if you’d like a review. I’ve reviewed a number of your albums in the past, and am still big-band editor at the award-winning web site, http://www.allaboutjazz. Would love to say a few words about the new album.
Thanks for considering the request. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes

Your writing is sensational. I am very proud that you were a student of mine at UT Martin.
Do you have CDs of your arrangements? I sure would like to get some.

I have known John for years and I am a member of the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra based out of Denver, and for now, I would like to acquire your take on “Holy, Holy, Holy”, but I have a question for you in the fact that if I order the chart today, how long would it take to get to me? The band is preparing for a sacred concert at my church here in Parker, CO and I would like to receive the chart in the next week or so. Let me know what the time frame might be on ordering that one chart…..great stuff!

I co-leaad the Jazz Bar Big Band in Edinburgh, Scotland and found you through the Facebook Big Band page. I love the chart on Will The Circle Be Unbroken and would like to purchase a copy. Leave it to Nashville to have such a smoking band! My question is whether it is possible to get a PDF copy as well as the printed version? Since I never put originals in the book, a PDF copy would save me the trouble of sitting by my scanner copying each page so that I can print it out onto Tabloid/A3 paper.

Our Big Band loves your music! We have recently done one of your charts that include a vocalist (He Keeps Me Singing, arranged for Babbie Mason). Am very interested in finding a similar Christmas selection. Advice, suggestions?

We need to get in touch regarding publication on a chart. How can we send you an email. Thank you for your time.

My best discovery of this recent Christmas season. Outstanding work! I’m really enjoying all your music.

Hi Chris, I always love your arrangements and cds and talked to you about 10 years ago on phone. I need to do a new cd for my big band but every studio I go to wants to do the 40′s sound. That is the last thing I want. My big band plays rock, motown, 80′s, new stuff etc and I want the presence like you get on your cd’s. Any advise on what I can say to engineer so they get it? Do you all do a couple takes on each chart? Thanks so much.

I am in the 8th grade and am an avid jazz lover. I love all of your stuff and own a bunch of your albums! They were just the kind of music I needed to get into the Christmas spirit this year.
I have a few questions for you. First, When are you going to release a new album? I really enjoyed last years Jingle Bell Mambo. I think that it was an absolutely genius idea to turn Christmas songs into the Latin style.
Also, are you familiar with Caleb Chapman studios in Utah? I play third Trumpet in the Crescent Little Big Band, and I was wondering if you have heard of them.
This leads me to my final question. The Crescent Little Big Band is attending the JEN Conference this January, and I was wondering if you were attending?
Thank you so much for sharing your musical and arranging talents. I really enjoy listening to your music!

Might you have been part of the horn section Cheryl Rogers used to bring to Atanta for sessions? Doppler Studios? I hired your section for a rock + roll track we recorded in Nashville? If so, great to find you…we should have a conversation. firstname.lastname@example.org. 770.663.4730. Cheers. Ron

Hey Chris, I am looking for the horn arrangement of a Gaither Vocal Band song called, “Give It Away.” I saw that you played bone on that chart back in 2006. Do you know who did the horn arrangement?
May 30, 2016 at 3:24 pm
Hi Michael- I’m thinking that I wrote that- let me check with my copiest, and see if he still has it- CM

Good evening Chris,
I’m a Music Ed student minoring in composition. I was just wondering, what score-notation software do you use? Obviously a skilled composer/arranger could make do with paper and pencil, this being the 21st century however, what would you recommend?
Yours in music,
October 3, 2016 at 4:56 am
Hi Ryan- I still write with pencil and paper. Producers/clients these days like to hear a mock-up before a recording session, and I use Digital Performer as my DAW, along with a library of samples. When everything is approved, and on paper like I want it, THEN I enter the score into Finale. A redundant process…but it’s my process.

I just bought a CD of Christmas songs, with your arrangement of “Do You Hear What I Hear,” sung by Carrie Underwood. I heard it on the radio on the way to work a few years back, and rediscovered it online. After listening over and over, I just had to buy my own copy. I’ve never really cared for the song, really…until I heard this version.
There’s something you’ve done that no other arranger has done. Kristin Chenowith is, I think, a more spectacular singer, but the arrangement for her version does nothing for me. Mannheim Steamroller’s version (and I love Chip Davis) is nowhere near yours. You took what is typically a staid, de rigueur, standard cadence that occurs throughout the song (typically just done by jumping from the dominant to the tonic (assuming the song’s in C, going from G to C or even B-flat to C) to this incredibly gorgeous, dissonant B-Flat Major 7th over D…or somesuch. I can’t really figure it out because I don’t currently have a keyboard; I just read that from some sheet music online, so I’m not sure it’s right. But the point is it’s so beautiful I listen to the song sometimes three times consecutively, waiting for those cadences. And half the time I think you mix it up by using another, different chord that jumps to the tonic. Gosh it’s so beautiful. Since I was a little boy, I would come home from church and hear the chords in my head and sing the bass, not the melody. I can hear a song once, then play it (but just 18th-century tonality; forget Steely Dan!) I’ve always wanted to be a writer and have a degree in music, so I really pay attention and know what I’m hearing. There’s a lot of stuff out there, even professionally produced, that is serviceable, but not, well, pretty. I’m sorry for the length of this, but I just wanted you to know that I think you’re a brilliant arranger. I find myself saying out loud “Gosh, that’s so beautiful,” after each listening of your arrangement. Someday I would like to get my studio up and running and do work half as good. With great admiration. Christopher Yochum

I am in my 70′s, a musician since age ,3 and have played with, heard about, listened to, 1000′s of music groups. Where have you been all my life?!! What a fantastic sound. Tight. Can say without doubt, you are one of the best I’ve encountered. Keep the sound coming. My husband and I will be looking for your recordings and purchasing any available. Any suggestion as to best source?

I purchased you arrangement for Deck the Halls for Big Band and Vocal Group a few years ago and it worked really well. I am getting ready to place another order and notice that although there seem be three pages of in your store, each page has the same list of charts, each page ends with the arrangement of Deck the Halls with Vocal Group. I want to make sure I am not missing anything. Please advise.

Hi Chris. I was in the IUP Marching Band with Doc Casavant in the late 90s. Are you the Chris McDonald that did the arrangement of Amazing Grace that the band has now played for nearly 40 years? If so, I would like to purchase it for my band to play. I now direct band in NC grades 5-12. How can I get that from you? Thanks!

August 9, 2019 at 9:09 pm
Chris, I’ve been a fan of your charts for years..such original and clever writing. I play bass trombone and you write well for that horn. I bought the Big Band Hymns CD about ’95 and listening to the first track, “I’ll Fly Away”, and enjoyed how you merged the old big band motives so fluidly. Then it melded to the “In The Mood” motive and the bass trombone player laid down that ff pedal tone! I knew the sound of Ernie Collins. No one else has that sound. His “tuba major playing bass trombone” sound is huge. I know his sound because He followed me playing bass trombone for Roger Breland and TRUTH. I kept up with their recordings and went to their concerts whenever I could, and always enjoyed Ernie’s playing. I’m glad you continued to use him.

Thank you Jimmy, and I agree about Ernie-he is quite a unique talent. I still get him in from NYC whenever I can.

Hi Chris, I was a member of the IUP Marching Band in 1981 when the band started playing your arrangement of Amazing Grace. I am working on a project regarding that 38 year tradition with a film teacher at IUP. We hope to use many clips of the band playing your arrangement of Amazing Grace. She asked me to find out who owns the rights to the arrangement and if we can get written permission to use the arrangement in the film. I have already asked Dr. Casavant if he has the rights and he said no. So do you have the rights to the arrangement and if so can I get your permission to use it in the film? Thanks so much for your help in this matter. Mary

Hi, Chris. Is it possible to play your arrangement on Fairest Lord Jesus without strings? Do you have a score sample for me?
October 20, 2019 at 11:57 am

Hi Joseph- thank you so much. Unfortunately, that music is owned by SeaWorld, and I cannot share it. You might check YouTube for visitor recordings.

I planning a Christmas concert for 2020 and I would like to buy the sheet music of “Deck the Hall”, but your site is not secure (he can’t provide a secure connection). So can you secure the site and the data with HTTPS ? Otherwise our music sheet budget will not accept.
Thank you and bravo for his arrangements which are superb.
