We do a “Big Band Praise” one Sunday every summer. I contacted you in July or August about some more tunes. At that time you were getting ready to go into the studio to record some new ones. I am wondering if you have any available now. I have all the Brentwood tunes and Big Band Hymns tunes already. Please let me know. I really enjoy playing your tunes.

Got your message about the new CD, “No Pews Required,” and was wondering if you’d like a review. I’ve reviewed a number of your albums in the past, and am still big-band editor at the award-winning web site, http://www.allaboutjazz. Would love to say a few words about the new album.
Thanks for considering the request. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes

I do have a big band in Greeley, Colo and would like a acquire some of your arrangements. From time to time, we do sacred concerts as well as the standard big band lit.

I have known John for years and I am a member of the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra based out of Denver, and for now, I would like to acquire your take on “Holy, Holy, Holy”, but I have a question for you in the fact that if I order the chart today, how long would it take to get to me? The band is preparing for a sacred concert at my church here in Parker, CO and I would like to receive the chart in the next week or so. Let me know what the time frame might be on ordering that one chart…..great stuff!

How can I get your big band arr. of Blue Christmas?
October 15, 2014 at 4:30 am
I co-leaad the Jazz Bar Big Band in Edinburgh, Scotland and found you through the Facebook Big Band page. I love the chart on Will The Circle Be Unbroken and would like to purchase a copy. Leave it to Nashville to have such a smoking band! My question is whether it is possible to get a PDF copy as well as the printed version? Since I never put originals in the book, a PDF copy would save me the trouble of sitting by my scanner copying each page so that I can print it out onto Tabloid/A3 paper.

Our Big Band loves your music! We have recently done one of your charts that include a vocalist (He Keeps Me Singing, arranged for Babbie Mason). Am very interested in finding a similar Christmas selection. Advice, suggestions?

We need to get in touch regarding publication on a chart. How can we send you an email. Thank you for your time.
All the best,

Good Day Sir Chris MacDonald,
My name is Irajá max and I am leader of the Big Band of the First Baptist Church of Curitiba, Parana State, Brazil and has for some time followed his work and enjoyed their arrangements and this year, with our group, we would like to record some hymns which three are with their arrangements:
1 Amazing Grace
2 Blessed Assurance
3 Joshua Fit the Battle
So I would ask your permission to use their arrangements to record these three songs, but we also would like to know if there is any cost and what value would be.
Thanks for your attention and look forward your return.
Thank you very much.

Hi Chris, I always love your arrangements and cds and talked to you about 10 years ago on phone. I need to do a new cd for my big band but every studio I go to wants to do the 40′s sound. That is the last thing I want. My big band plays rock, motown, 80′s, new stuff etc and I want the presence like you get on your cd’s. Any advise on what I can say to engineer so they get it? Do you all do a couple takes on each chart? Thanks so much.

I am in the 8th grade and am an avid jazz lover. I love all of your stuff and own a bunch of your albums! They were just the kind of music I needed to get into the Christmas spirit this year.
I have a few questions for you. First, When are you going to release a new album? I really enjoyed last years Jingle Bell Mambo. I think that it was an absolutely genius idea to turn Christmas songs into the Latin style.
Also, are you familiar with Caleb Chapman studios in Utah? I play third Trumpet in the Crescent Little Big Band, and I was wondering if you have heard of them.
This leads me to my final question. The Crescent Little Big Band is attending the JEN Conference this January, and I was wondering if you were attending?
Thank you so much for sharing your musical and arranging talents. I really enjoy listening to your music!

Might you have been part of the horn section Cheryl Rogers used to bring to Atanta for sessions? Doppler Studios? I hired your section for a rock + roll track we recorded in Nashville? If so, great to find you…we should have a conversation. email@example.com. 770.663.4730. Cheers. Ron

I’m writing a derivative, big band adaptation and arrangement of a John Scofield tune – Do Like Eddie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnLi7-Q7ag0
I have corresponded with John’s publisher, Scoway Music, and I’m going to re-title the tune so it will be a derivative-type copyright (50% me and 50% Scoway Music).
I’m a newbie with this arranging thing….so….my question is; after I get my arrangement copyrighted, how do I go about submitting it you for your consideration? Thanks
April 2, 2016 at 6:16 am
At this time, I am only recording and publishing my own material, so I am not seeking outside submissions. Things cold change, but that’s my plan for the time being. However, I would like to hear what you come up with-that’s a very cool tune… Best of luck-Chris

Hey Chris, I am looking for the horn arrangement of a Gaither Vocal Band song called, “Give It Away.” I saw that you played bone on that chart back in 2006. Do you know who did the horn arrangement?

Hi Mr McDonald,
My name is Eduardo and I’m from Brazil. I sing with my wife and we would like to know what we need to do in order to have the licensee to record the song Joshua fit the battle of Jericho using your arrangement which is fantastic!!! We have a band of friends that play quite well and they are very excited to record it.
Is it possible??? How much do we need to pay for that??? Does it cost too much???
We’ll be waiting for your response
June 29, 2016 at 7:40 am
The publisher of that arrangement is Spring Hill Music…for license request go here: https://musicservices.org/license

Good evening Chris,
I’m a Music Ed student minoring in composition. I was just wondering, what score-notation software do you use? Obviously a skilled composer/arranger could make do with paper and pencil, this being the 21st century however, what would you recommend?
Yours in music,
October 3, 2016 at 4:56 am
Hi Ryan- I still write with pencil and paper. Producers/clients these days like to hear a mock-up before a recording session, and I use Digital Performer as my DAW, along with a library of samples. When everything is approved, and on paper like I want it, THEN I enter the score into Finale. A redundant process…but it’s my process.

I just bought a CD of Christmas songs, with your arrangement of “Do You Hear What I Hear,” sung by Carrie Underwood. I heard it on the radio on the way to work a few years back, and rediscovered it online. After listening over and over, I just had to buy my own copy. I’ve never really cared for the song, really…until I heard this version.
There’s something you’ve done that no other arranger has done. Kristin Chenowith is, I think, a more spectacular singer, but the arrangement for her version does nothing for me. Mannheim Steamroller’s version (and I love Chip Davis) is nowhere near yours. You took what is typically a staid, de rigueur, standard cadence that occurs throughout the song (typically just done by jumping from the dominant to the tonic (assuming the song’s in C, going from G to C or even B-flat to C) to this incredibly gorgeous, dissonant B-Flat Major 7th over D…or somesuch. I can’t really figure it out because I don’t currently have a keyboard; I just read that from some sheet music online, so I’m not sure it’s right. But the point is it’s so beautiful I listen to the song sometimes three times consecutively, waiting for those cadences. And half the time I think you mix it up by using another, different chord that jumps to the tonic. Gosh it’s so beautiful. Since I was a little boy, I would come home from church and hear the chords in my head and sing the bass, not the melody. I can hear a song once, then play it (but just 18th-century tonality; forget Steely Dan!) I’ve always wanted to be a writer and have a degree in music, so I really pay attention and know what I’m hearing. There’s a lot of stuff out there, even professionally produced, that is serviceable, but not, well, pretty. I’m sorry for the length of this, but I just wanted you to know that I think you’re a brilliant arranger. I find myself saying out loud “Gosh, that’s so beautiful,” after each listening of your arrangement. Someday I would like to get my studio up and running and do work half as good. With great admiration. Christopher Yochum

I am in my 70′s, a musician since age ,3 and have played with, heard about, listened to, 1000′s of music groups. Where have you been all my life?!! What a fantastic sound. Tight. Can say without doubt, you are one of the best I’ve encountered. Keep the sound coming. My husband and I will be looking for your recordings and purchasing any available. Any suggestion as to best source?
